How do natural deodorants work exactly?

Hi, I make natural deodorants in Tasmania, a small island off the south of Australia. They work! And i'm wondering how to explain the science of how they work better than the standard explanations like 'they neutralise odor causing bacteria' etc Do the active ingredients in natural deodorants (which may include coconut oil, shea butter, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium hydroxide, essential oils etc) actually kill the bacteria? How does the relative alkalinity/acidity of the axilla effect BO? Here's my website if you're interested and i'll send you some if you'd like to put it to the test :-) www.myshayorganics.com I read Mark Smith's article about your research in The Australian magazine and i found it fascinating! Hi Tara, thanks for your questions and thanks for your kind words. To answer your questions: 1/ sodium bicarbonate has both an antibacterial effect and a odor-neutralizing effect. Some essential oils have a natural antibacterial effect - it depends which you use. Magnesium hydroxide and coconut oil can also have an antibacterial effect. The pH has an impact on which bacteria can grow in the underarm, so that is a very relevant question. Best of luck with your natural deodorants! Best, Chris
