Hi My armpits smell like onion, Specially when I get too nervous it's embarrassing I smell it I wonder if other people smell it as well. I'm getting treated for hair laser removal and it's so embarrassing when I go and I'm not wearing any deodorant, I read that deodorant Donna Karen it works like magic, well I went to Macy's today to buy it, $28 dollars we'll see if it works. What really works on me is the baking soda I don't like to use it all the time because I don't know if it's healthy or not, I put on my deodorant and a bit of the baking soda and that really works for me but like I said I don't use it every day. I just want to be a normal lady. Do men suffer from the onion smell?

Hi Patty, thanks for your question. Yes, men can suffer from the union smell as well. Union smell comes from sulfurous compounds which are secreted and become volatile in the armpit. Often it is Staphylococcus hominis that is associated with these sulfurous compounds. It is known as a main contributor to that particular body odor pathway (there are other pathways as well). When you are nervous, you particularly stimulate the apocrine sweat glands. The content of the sweat glands is pushed into the hair follicle and onto the skin epidermis. The hair follicle/sweat gland already contains bacteria converting the precursors, so you have an immediate (mal)odor in the armpit. Baking soda is an efficient antibacterial product, and it reacts with the sweat compounds. It is not harmful long term, but it can cause irritation on the short term, certainly if the concentration is too high. Best, Chris
