counter intuitive

Name:
antiperspirant
More information:
why does antiperspirant work for people who don't have any armpit odor and not for people who do have armpit odor? isn't that counter intuitive?

Comments

Hi there! To start with: antiperspirant is meant to be used against hyperhidrosis (sweating too much), and it is also very effective in doing that. The aluminium salts form a precipitation in the eccrine sweat ducts, caused a temporary blockage so sweat cannot get out anymore. It is also antibacterial, so it will lead to a reduction in underarm bacteria (which will also be reflected in less odor). The microbiome inside the sweat glands & hair follicles are not touched. And there is the problem: for those people who have malodors, the sweat glands and hair follicles contain bacteria that cause malodors. They are not harmed by the antiperspirant and can more efficiently recolonize the armpit region. That can lead to an increase in malodorous bacteria. Can - not necessarily. It is different for everybody.
